If you remember from our 2021 GMC Yukon Diesel mpg test, we’ve already concluded GM’s diesel powertrain for this 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 mpg test, and equally a Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Diesel mpg test, to be quite efficient despite hauling around a curb weight of over 5,000 pounds. As a pickup though, what can we expect from a test of the GMC Sierra 1500 diesel fuel economy? Comparatively, our results from the Yukon test came out to a staggering 28 mpg though the Yukon benefits from a more teardrop, aerodynamic design at the back despite weighing a bit more than the Sierra. If you’d like to compare more apples to apples, we also performed a Cadillac Escalade mpg test with the 6.2-liter V-8 and that came to 19 mpg. We’re not saying to take the margin between the two powertrains and compare accordingly for the two different body styles, we’re just saying theoretically you could figure the result for yourself if this GMC Sierra 1500 mpg test was conducted with the 6.2-liter V-8; we’re not saying, we’re just saying.
After Charlie finished the GMC Sierra 1500 mpg test, he found the result to be in the ballpark between 24 and 25 mpg due to a possibly faulty fuel fill. The EPA claims this truck’s mpg during their testing to come to 23 miles per gallon and considering when we did our Yukon test it was also considerably better than EPA, it makes sense. For a half-ton diesel truck equipped with knobby, off-road tires and four-wheel-drive, 24 mpg on the highway is really quite impressive compared to what a similarly equipped truck from 25 years ago would’ve consumed. For blue-collar workers looking to decrease their fuel costs while fuel prices are on the rise, this is a great alternative with plenty of low-end torque to confidently tow with. Not only did our GMC Sierra 1500 diesel gas mileage test reveal it’s less expensive to purchase than a 3/4-ton or one-ton pickup, but it showed this truck also has just the same flexibility to tow recreational loads with more savings on fuel as shown by our GMC Sierra 1500 diesel fuel economy test.
For those who road trip these trucks daily, it would interest you to know if you were to test this GMC Sierra 1500 diesel gas mileage for yourself with a 24-gallon fuel tank, then you can expect to travel about 570 miles depending on weather and road conditions. How We Test the GMC Sierra 1500 Diesel Gas Mileage:
Daily Motor‘s real-world highway-fuel-economy test of the GMC Sierra 1500 mpg consists of over 100 miles of consistent highway driving. We fill the vehicle using the “three-click method,” meaning running the gas pump on high flow until it clicks, waiting 10 seconds, running low flow until it clicks again, waiting another 10 seconds, then running low flow one last time. The lowest-octane fuel accepted by the vehicle’s manufacturer is used. We then drive 50 or 100 miles on public highway in one direction and then back in the opposite direction, attempting not to draft or drive aggressively. We set the cruise control at GPS-indicated 72 mph in an attempt to achieve a moving average speed of 70 mph over the entire test. Upon return to the gas station, we refill at the same gas pump as the initial fill using the same method. Miles per gallon is determined by dividing total miles traveled by fuel used. In cases where our observed figure differs greatly from the vehicle’s indicated figure and/or EPA’s estimate, we may recommend a number in between or plan to retest the vehicle.
