Naturally, we were excited to test the 2022 Volkswagen Golf R MPG because not only is it the new version of Volkswagen’s race-tuned, all-wheel-drive hatchback but it’s a great daily driver! Through time, the Golf chassis proves to be practical and capable of easily conquering winter conditions with appropriate tires, and its hatchback capabilities can move most cargo from one place to the other. Specifically, the writer of this piece moved his entire life, including a set of mounted Bridgestone Blizzak snow tires, from Idaho to Michigan three times in the back of a MK7.5 GTI; the art of Tetris proved most helpful. Our question is can the Volkswagen Golf R gas mileage also be a fuel-sipping solution to someone looking to switch out of a gas-guzzling sports car?
The EPA claims the Volkswagen Golf R fuel economy of the last generation to come to 29 MPG for the manual transmission and 30 MPG for the dual-clutch automatic. We were hopeful during this test for the new all-wheel-drive system from Magna to somehow make a difference no matter how unlikely. For the MK8 Golf R, the EPA claims 28 MPG on the highway for the manual transmission and 30 MPG for the automatic, however, our test revealed the Volkswagen Golf R MPG to come out to one more mile per gallon despite circumstances that usually hurt fuel economy ratings during our tests! Not only was the air temperature appropriate for a brisk Michigan winter but our test car was also rolling on winter tires; these are both factors that usually hurt fuel economy tests, so we can assume this powertrain to achieve even better than 31 MPG!
If you were to take this car on a jolly road trip with a 14.5-gallon fuel tank, then you can expect to travel 450 miles until you’re in desperate need of a pit stop. We’re impressed with the fun and practicality to be had with the new Golf R and something we’re even more surprised about is the fact this car has a drift mode thanks to the trick new rear drivetrain from Magna. How We Test the Volkswagen Golf R Gas Mileage:
Daily Motor‘s real-world highway fuel economy test of the 2022 Volkswagen Golf R MPG consists of over 100 miles of consistent highway driving. We fill this Golf R using the “three-click method,” meaning running the gas pump on super fast flow until it clicks, waiting ten seconds, running low flow until it clicks again, waiting another ten seconds, then running low flow one last time. The lowest octane fuel accepted by the vehicle’s manufacturer is used. We then drive 50 miles on public highway in one direction and then back in the opposite direction, attempting not to draft or drive aggressively. We set the cruise control at GPS-indicated 73 MPH in an attempt to achieve a moving average speed of 70 MPH over the entire test. Upon return to the gas station, we refill at the same gas pump as the initial fill using the same method. Miles per gallon is determined by dividing total miles traveled by fuel consumed. In cases where our observed figure differs greatly from the vehicle’s indicated figure and/or EPA’s estimate, we may recommend a number in between or plan to retest the 2022 Volkswagen Golf R gas mileage. Thanks for reading our test of the Volkswagen Golf R fuel economy on the highway!
