2020 Subaru Forester MPG: Practical at the Pump

2020 Subaru Forester MPG

The tried and true Subaru Forester is not a very exciting vehicle for automotive enthusiasts, but it does check a lot of boxes for the general consumer including a bulletproof all-wheel drive system and impressive fuel economy. The Forester’s roomy interior and headspace provide enough room for families, and even though it’s a high-riding crossover, we found an impressive 2022 Subaru Forester mpg result to support anyone’s decision to buy one.

After our highway fuel economy test, the 2020 Subaru Forester mpg result came back at 35 miles per gallon, which is astonishing for any mid-size crossover with all-wheel-drive, especially when the system is permanent like in most Subaru products. The EPA claims 33 mpg, but our Subaru Forester fuel economy test proves the Forester has more potential at the pump when driven at realistic highway speeds.

On long road trips to far off campsites and hiking trails, the Forester will provide about 580 miles between fills, though how much gear you take with you will of course affect that number. Your poor dog’s bladder will need relieving much sooner than that if you are living a true Subaru lifestyle. Hot tip: Subaru is incredibly animal friendly and has dedicated dog areas at most of their dealerships.

How We Test the Subaru Forester Fuel Economy

Daily Motor‘s real-world 2020 Subaru Forester mpg test consists of over 100 miles of consistent highway driving. We fill the vehicle using the “three-click method,” meaning running the gas pump on high flow until it clicks, waiting ten seconds, running an easy, low flow until it clicks again, waiting another ten seconds, then running low flow one more time. The lowest octane fuel accepted by the vehicle’s manufacturer is used, in this case 87. We then drive 50 miles on the freeway in one direction and then back in the opposite direction, attempting not to drive aggressively or draft any vehicles. We set the cruise control during our Subaru Forester fuel economy test at GPS-indicated 73 MPH in an attempt to achieve a moving average speed of 70 MPH over the trip. Upon return, we refill at the same gas pump as the initial fill using the same three-click method. MPG is determined by dividing miles traveled by fuel used. In cases where our observed figure differs greatly from the vehicle’s indicated figure and/or EPA’s number, we may recommend a result or plan to retest the vehicle.
