The Subaru BRZ quickly became a popular car back in 2013 with the main goal of having fun at low speeds and hanging the tail out on a budget. I, myself, autocrossed my Raven Black 2013 Scion FR-S to hone my performance driving skills and I never had a better or more fun teacher than my FR-S. The new 2022 Subaru BRZ can be yours starting around $28,000, and that’s great but what is the 2022 Subaru BRZ mpg going to come out to on top of that monthly payment?
The EPA claims the 2022 Subaru BRZ mpg is about 20 in the city and 27 on the highway for the BRZ manual and 21 in the city and 30 on the highway for the BRZ automatic; this is due to longer gearing in both the transmission ratios and the final drive ratio on the automatic. Better fuel economy though a bit less zippy! The EPA includes about 35% of city driving in their highway number, so what does the Subaru BRZ fuel economy come out to when driven just on the highway?
During our 2022 Subaru BRZ mpg test in the cold on Michigan’s interstate 94, we found this Subaru to be yet another overachiever! At an average of 70 miles per hour, we found the Subaru BRZ gas mileage to result in almost 34.5 mpg. This is over four mpg more than what the EPA found during their Subaru BRZ fuel economy! Needless to say, we can’t wait to get our hands on the Subaru BRZ manual to see what that will churn out on the highway. Expect it to be less than the automatic still but we can be optimistic that it will improve on the EPA’s claim. Don’t forget, this number will improve slightly with warmer temperatures! You can expect these numbers multiplied with a 13.2 gallon tank to get a highway cruising range of about 440 miles in the BRZ from pump to pump.

How We Test the 2022 Subaru BRZ Fuel Economy:
This Daily Motor 2022 Subaru BRZ mpg and range test consists of over 100 miles of consistent highway driving. We fill the car with gasoline using the “three-click method,” meaning running the gas pump on high flow until it clicks off, waiting ten seconds, running low flow until it clicks off again, waiting another ten seconds, then running low flow one very last time. The lowest-octane gasoline accepted by the vehicle’s manufacturer is used. We then drive about fifty miles on public highway in one direction and then back in the opposite direction, attempting not to draft or drive aggressively. We set the cruise control during our Subaru BRZ gas mileage at GPS-indicated 72 mph in an attempt to achieve a moving average speed of 70 mph over the entire test. Upon return to the gas station, we refill at the same fuel pump as the initial fill using the same fueling method. Miles per gallon is determined by dividing total miles traveled by fuel used. In cases where our observed figure differs greatly from the vehicle’s indicated figure and/or EPA’s estimate, we may recommend a number in between or plan to retest the vehicle.
