As a competitor to the Tesla Model Y, Ford Mustang Mach-E, and Audi Q4 e-tron as a sibling rivalry, the new Volkswagen ID.4 has proven itself as a valiant offering to the electric SUV community. With a mostly appealing price, this new German electric SUV has caught the eye of numerous Americans looking to make the transition from internal combustion to electricity, but will creative advertising gambits be enough to capture the hearts of progressive families across America? Lower sticker prices mean smaller battery capacities and smaller battery capacities mean family friendly SUVs such as the ID.4 aren’t really the best choice for making good time during a long haul and we wanted to test the ID.4’s range in the real world.

Volkswagen claims the ID.4 to travel about 250 miles per charge depending on which trim level and drivetrain is selected. Is 250 miles of Volkswagen ID.4 range enough to comfortably and speedily get to your final destination? Charlie took Volkswagen’s new electric SUV out to find if during our real world driving test it’ll achieve better or worse results than EPA and manufacturer claims.

After successfully releasing the charge cable after many tries and completing our real-word highway test of the Volkswagen ID.4’s range, Charlie found the ID.4’s consumption to be 3.2 miles per kWh of electricity. Multiplied by the Volkswagen ID.4’s battery capacity, that would put the expected range at real-world highway speeds at 263 miles. To some, this might not be enough range for comfortable highway long-distance cruising but would it be enough for the majority of electric SUV buyers? Compared to the Tesla Model Y range during the same test for apples to apples, the Model Y SR got a range expectation of 55 miles less than the ID.4 range.

How We Test the Volkswagen ID.4 MPGe

This Daily Motor real-world highway test of the Volkswagen ID.4 range consists of almost 100 miles of consistent highway driving. We first charge the car as close to 100% as we can, then drive about 50 miles on public highway in one direction and then back in the opposite direction, attempting not to draft or drive aggressively. We set the cruise control at GPS-indicated 72 MPH in an attempt to achieve a moving average speed of 70 MPH over the entire test. Upon return to the Chargepoint, we recharge at the same plug as the initial charge. Miles per kWh of the Volkswagen ID.4 range is determined by dividing total miles traveled by kWh charged at the end. In cases where our observed figure differs greatly from the vehicle’s indicated figure and/or EPA’s estimate, we may recommend a number in between or plan to retest the vehicle.
