As the best-selling truck in America, the test of the Ford F-150 hybrid mpg is one of most important trials we need to perform! The Ford F-150 is a half-ton truck and therefore, its fuel economy is not that great as a commuter, but what if it was a hybrid? The most recent generation of the F-150 comes with a plethora of engine choices, but the one that made it into the hybrid is the 3.5-liter EcoBoost twin-turbocharged V-6 combined with an electric motor between the engine and transmission.
What does this mean? You get more low-end torque for towing and you save some Benjamins at the pump! Ford decided 430 horsepower was a decent amount of power and torque comes in at 570 pound-feet. For comparison, the new Toyota Tundra Hybrid, which has yet to be released, beats the F-150 Hybrid by seven horsepower and thirteen pound-feet of torque. The horsepower wars rage onward!
The electric system in the Ford F-150 doesn’t just act as a way to power the electric motor, it also can power up to 7.2 kWh of tools and other accessories plugged into the Pro Power Onboard system. Theoretically, you can charge an electric car with your Ford F-150 PowerBoost. Do not attempt to without suffering possible repercussions.
What to Expect from the Ford F-150 PowerBoost MPG:
So how does the Ford F-150 PowerBoost mpg perform on the highway in a real-world test? After Charlie returned, he found the Ford F-150 hybrid mpg to be right on the EPA’s mark at 24 mpg after we rounded up from 23.6 mpg. It’s nice to know despite our higher average speed compared to the EPA’s test, you still get the same number for the Ford F-150 Hybrid fuel economy result.
Although, we got the same number as the EPA for the Ford F-150 hybrid mpg on the highway, where these new hybrid trucks really shine is around town. The other powertrains offered in the F-150 get under 20 mpg in the city while the hybrid holds strong at 24 mpg in four-wheel drive form. How We Test the Ford F-150 Hybrid Gas Mileage:
Daily Motor‘s real-world highway fuel economy test of the Ford F-150 hybrid mpg consists of over 50 miles of consistent highway driving. We fill the truck using the “three-click method,” meaning running the gas pump on super fast flow until it clicks, waiting ten seconds, running low flow until it clicks again, waiting another ten seconds, then running low flow one last time. The lowest octane fuel accepted by the vehicle’s manufacturer is used during our Ford F-150 PowerBoost mpg test. We then drive on public highway in one direction and then back in the opposite direction, attempting not to draft or drive aggressively. We set the cruise control during our test of the Ford F-150 Hybrid fuel economy at a GPS-indicated 73 MPH in an attempt to achieve a moving average speed of 70 MPH over the entire test. Upon return to the gas station, we refill at the same gas pump as the initial fill using the same method. Miles per gallon is determined by dividing total miles traveled by fuel consumed. In cases where our observed figure of the Ford F-150 PowerBoost mpg differs greatly from the vehicle’s indicated figure and/or EPA’s estimate, we may recommend a number in between or plan to retest the vehicle.
